Lyrics:

Rape, murder, lies, brutality
Death greed, hatred, reality
Could that be me?
Couldn’t that be me?

Believing their own trash
Swallowing their own lies
Crawling through the mud
Looking up with hollowed eyes
Gangrene, o so sweet
Seeping from our core
Emaciate by depravity,
O can’t we have some more!

This is reality
This is the state of our depravity
No we can’t smell the putrid stench
Leaking from our own rotting sod
This is reality
This is the state of our depravity
This is all we can hope to be
Without… God!

The story behind the song…

We went to a youth retreat and the first night the topic was “desperation”.  The speaker gave some real life examples of people who were desperate.  Like a lady in Mexico whose house had burned down with everything she owns and the title to the land, and he looked in her eyes as she asked him for help for her and her children.  Like a man in Pakistan whose family was starving so he sold their farm animals one by one, and then everything they owned, and then beams from his house and finally in complete desperation he sold one of his sons at the market.  That is desperate.  Until we realize just how fallen we are, just how desperate we are, we will never fully be transformed by the grace of God.  This song for me was a way for me to consider just how lost I am without God.

I predict that it will be the next “Shout to the Lord” sung in churches across the nation.  Can’t you just picture every church in America starting their services with a song that starts with the word “rape”?!
